With the sun’s first rays, Jellyfish Lake, located 550 miles east of the Philippines in the island nation of Palau, comes alive. As the sky brightens in the east, the golden jellies turn and swim toward a solar beacon.

Nobody painted these trees, they simply have such an unusual colored skin.

These eucalyptus are  growing in New Guinea and Sulawesi.

Residents of Los Pinos, Colombia, including children, use a zipline for their daily commute. There are two ways in or out of Los Pinos– A two-hour hike or a one-minute zip line ride. Eight children use the zip line daily to go to school and return home. There are no plans to build a bridge, because the population of the village doesn’t justify it. Two separate cables strung across the river 1,200 feet below allow you to come and go, so– bring your own pulley, rope, and brake, and away you go! It looks like fun, but I don’t know about doing it every day.

The city of Al Hajjara in Republic of Yemen* Haraz Mountains looks ancient yet modern at the same time: the taller of the brown, flat-roofed houses so precariously balanced on top of the mountain resemble early skyscrapers. Many are decorated with elaborate white friezes and patterns so typical for the area. The town’s remoteness and narrow streets suggest a closely knit community that could, in times of invasions, have allowed outsiders to enter yet not necessarily to leave

Scientists have warned that the world’s commitments so far fall short of what is needed to keep global temperature increases below 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F) above pre-industrial levels and head off the worst of global warming. They say global warming will create rising sea levels,  increasing drought, more extreme weather and the extinction of some species. Here’s a look at images coming out of Copenhagen and a few from around the globe.

The Ancient Egyptians kept many animals as household pets, including cats, dogs, monkeys, gazelles, and birds.

Pets were not only present as paintings or models. The mummified bodies of pets have also been found in tombs. A certain Hapymen, buried at Abydos, was so fond of his pet dog that it was mummified and wrapped in linen, and placed at the side of his feet in his coffin

The most amusing fish in the world

The gruelling 150-mile (240km) Sand Marathon (Marathon des Sables) takes place near Ouarzazate in Morocco. Around 700 dedicated competitors from around the world take on the course over 11 long days.

Certainly not for the faint-hearted, this is a race for those with a will of iron and an even stronger constitution. The race includes a full marathon on one day, and a 50-mile stage, as well as others of varying length and terrain. Competitors must carry all their equipment on their backs. Only a carefully rationed nine litres of water and open-sided local tents are provided daily by the organisers

Based in the scenic, craggy desert outside Ouarzazate, marathon life centres around the camp in which competitors rest after a day’s running. Although it might sound like hell on earth for 99% of the population, the race is without a doubt one of the most rewarding and intense in the world.
